September Birthstone: Blue Sapphire
Happy Birthday, September! The September Birthstone is the Blue Sapphire.
Named for the Greek word “sapphirus,” meaning the color blue, Sapphires have long been a favorite. Ancient civilizations said that the world was set upon an enormous sapphire, which painted the sky blue with its reflection. Sapphires are also prominent among the British Crown Jewels, and Prince Charles famously chose the Sapphire as the engagement stone when he proposed to Princess Diana.
Sapphire is a variety of the mineral corundum, which can be found in every color imaginable. Corundum in red is considered a Ruby, and all other colors fall under the designation of sapphire. The most prized color of Sapphire is the traditional deep, rich blue.
The largest known star sapphire is the famous Star of India, weighing in at a stunning 563 carats. Cut to reflect light from inclusions within the stone, the Star of India reveals a bright six-legged star pattern. It is currently on display at the American Museum of Natural History.
About Birthstone Traditions:
Traditionally, there is a birthstone associated with each month. This is believed to date back to the breastplate of Aaron, which is said to have contained twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel.
There are plenty of legends and myths about the healing powers of birthstones and their therapeutic use. The most common of these says that wearing a gemstone during its assigned month amplifies its healing powers. So, to maximize potential benefits, an individual would own all twelve birthstones, and would wear the appropriate stone each month.
Today, birthstones correlating to the month in which you were born are popular gift items to commemorate birthdays, milestones (like graduations), and other important occasions. “Mother” jewelry is also popular; these special keepsake items commonly include the birthstone of each family member.
